In 2020, training costs for AI for GPT-3 was somewhere around close to 4 and 12 million dollars. And then 3 years later with GPT-4, cost somewhere between 40 and 100 million dollars. Their own internal projections show losses tripling to $14 billion in 2026 against roughly $20 billion in expected sales. Inference costs, which is the cost of actually running ChatGPT for 900 million users, reached $8.4 billion in 2025 alone and are projected to hit 14 billion in 26. Overall, this points to specialized systems and vertically integrated players shaping what comes next far more than surface narratives suggest.
