Farzad: Elon Says Debt Markets Have Almost Entirely Shut Off for Companies Without Substantial Revenue Outside AI Data Centers, SpaceX Closed $40B of Debt for GPUs, and 200+ Neoclouds Face "Guppy-Level Death" + Elon on Why Starlink Must Remain Civilian

Farzad's Sunday was RTs and likes, and three of the RTs were about who can still borrow money for AI compute. Elon said debt markets have almost entirely shut off for companies without substantial revenue outside AI data centers, and that SpaceX closed $40B of GPU debt. Farzad also liked Elon on why Starlink must remain civilian.

"Guppy-level death"

Elon Musk, Sunday at 2:11pm CT, replying to chamath: Pretty much. As of the past few weeks, debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn't have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers. SpaceX closed $40B of debt for GPUs, but we're investment grade and have Starlink & launch revenue. That means the 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation. Some will make it through, but not many.

Elon was answering chamath, whose post from Sunday at 11:13am CT starts: As someone with a portfolio of energized land assets here is what I am seeing. Point one says neoclouds are disorganized and poorly capitalized, and that some are definitely better than others. Point two says hyperscalers, the biggest cloud companies, are intractable, bureaucratic organizations that take 3 months to do an NDA. The post cuts off there in this pull, so it isn't clear how much of it Elon's "Pretty much" covers.

Neoclouds are the newer cloud companies built mainly to rent out GPUs, the chips that train and run AI. Investment grade is a credit rating that marks a borrower's debt as relatively low risk.

The read on debt markets and the neocloud prediction are Elon's. The post doesn't name any neoclouds or say which ones Elon thinks will make it through.

EmmetPeppers quoted Elon's reply at 2:18pm CT: IF you're paying attention to financial markets and/or overall US economy THEN this dialogue below is gold standard to digest. Very high signal to noise ratio and better than all the 'click bait headlines' you will be served in coming weeks/months trying to further explain this trend.

Farzad liked that one too and RTd it at 9:09pm CT, also without a comment.

"Not a major factor this quarter"

SawyerMerritt, Sunday at 2:37pm CT: Elon confirms that SpaceX has closed a new $40B debt raise to fund GPU purchases/compute buildout.

The same post says that on its recent earnings call SpaceX said it expects Q4 2026 capex of $35 billion to $40 billion. Capex is capital spending, the money that goes into long-lived things like hardware and buildings.

Elon replied at 2:50pm CT: This is primarily callable debt for GPU purchases that will arrive in Q1 and Q2. Not a major factor this quarter.

That's how Elon describes the debt. The reply doesn't spell out its terms.

Farzad liked it and RTd it at 4:50pm CT, again with no comment.

Elon on keeping Starlink civilian

Elon Musk, Sunday at 1:12am CT, replying to FilmLadd: This is indeed one of the main reasons that Starlink must remain a civilian operation. It can be used for infrastructure that is military, but it cannot be used for unequivocally offensive strikes that make it fair game to be struck back. An adversary blowing up Starlink satellites would create a domino effect of destruction that would generate a vast field of debris making space unusable.

FilmLadd's post, from Saturday at 10:35pm CT, said OSINT analysts who have been bashing Elon for days "don't get it." It said Russia has the capacity to blow up satellites in space and proved it on November 15, 2021, by firing a PL-19 Nudol missile at an old satellite of its own. OSINT means open-source intelligence, which is analysis built from public information. The rest of FilmLadd's post is cut off in this pull, and the visible part doesn't say what the bashing was about.

The civilian position and the debris scenario are Elon's. Farzad liked the post and didn't comment on it.

Roadster at the Petersen

MinimalDuck, Sunday at 2:10pm CT: I got to see the @Tesla Roadster up close and personal yesterday at the Petersen with @wholemars and this car is absolutely stunning 😍 If you can, go check it out asap! It's only there for 3 more days and while your there make sure to grab lunch at the Meyers Manx Cafe! Sooo good! Also it has 4 20kw fans! Nice @elonmusk

"Yesterday" there means Saturday. The Petersen is the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. The 3 more days and the fan count both come from MinimalDuck's post, which doesn't say what the fans do.

Farzad liked it and RTd it at 7:02pm CT.
