China’s Long March 10B Catch: From One Recovery to a Manufacturing Space Race
China’s Long March 10B completed the country’s first controlled booster recovery after an orbital launch on July 10, 2026, catching the first stage with ship-borne nets in the South China Sea rather than landing legs—saving vehicle mass for roughly 16 metric tons to low Earth orbit. One catch does not erase SpaceX’s lead: Falcon boosters have landed on the order of ~600 times, some have flown 30+ missions, and Falcon 9 flew 165 orbital missions in 2025. The strategic shift is from “can they recover?” to “how fast can they scale reuse,” because cheap, frequent launch underwrites constellations for communications, missile warning, Earth observation, and eventual orbital industry.
