Elon Musk Is About to Build Drones: Why Tesla Plus SpaceX Undercuts DJI
The obvious unfinished product between Tesla and SpaceX is commercial drones: Tesla’s battery supply chain—built out from the Nevada Gigafactory era when the world lacked capacity for a million vehicles a year—directly attacks the energy-density limit that decides flight time, while SpaceX’s lightweight structures and fluid-dynamics practice can co-design frames and propellers lighter and tougher than typical DJI-class airframes. Motors scale down from EV traction units; cameras and controllers are commodities beside that stack, and FSD-style end-to-end vision nets could turn multi-camera drones into autonomous delivery and inspection platforms rather than hover-and-hope autopilots. Geopolitically, DJI’s estimated 70–80% commercial share leaves U.S. businesses and infrastructure dependent on Chinese hardware, while Anduril-class military players do not fill the commercial gap. Overall, this aims at a domestic, vertically integrated drone line that also prototypes eVTOL problems—batteries, motors, autonomy, cost—at crash-tolerant scale before human-carrying craft.
