The pain we treat as normal
Elon’s opener is Los Angeles traffic. Pasadena to El Segundo in rush hour can take longer than flying to another city. You drive the whole way unless supervised Full Self-Driving is already doing the work. He says supervised FSD is already working well for people in the room. The next step is unsupervised: fall asleep, wake up at the destination.
That is not a gadget feature. It is time returned. Parking-spot hunting counts as waste too. So does paying for a machine that sits idle most of the week.
Idle cars are the real product bug
Elon’s utilization math: an average passenger car runs about 10 hours a week out of 168. Ownership still loads insurance, payments, and storage onto those thin hours. If autonomy lets the same car work five to ten times more, the same asset is worth five to ten times more. Autonomy is safer miles. It is also higher utilization on steel you already paid to build.
Elevators, lounges, and 10x safer
He reaches for the elevator-operator analogy. Operators used to stand in every shaft. Now you press a button and feel nothing. Seeing a human with a big relay switch would look strange. Cars go the same way.
Safety claim as Elon framed it on stage: autonomous cars eventually about 10 times safer than a human, later stretched to roughly 10 to 30 times because the fleet trains on millions of simultaneous “lives,” sees in all directions, and does not get tired or text. Treat those multiples as Elon’s stage forecast, not a regulator scorecard.
The cabin becomes a small lounge. Phone, movie, work. You get out at the place you meant to reach.
Individualized mass transit, priced like a bus that wins
Elon’s cost frame is the one Farzad wants remembered. City bus true cost to a city is about a dollar a mile (not the subsidized ticket). Cybercab operating cost over time around 20 cents a mile. All-in price with taxes and the rest around 30 to 40 cents a mile. That is “individualized mass transit” language: point-to-point service at mass-transit cost structure.
He said you will be able to buy one, expected below $30,000. Uber and Lyft drivers, in his model, can become “shepherds” of flocks of about 10 to 20 cars instead of driving every mile themselves.
Timeline hedges (his words)
Unsupervised FSD start in Texas and California “next year” on Model 3 and Model Y, then S, X, Cybertruck: “all our cars.” That “next year” was spoken on Oct 10, 2024, so it meant 2025, not a 2027 promise from this Exclusive. Cybercab production “in 2026,” hedged to “before 2027,” with Elon admitting he runs optimistic on clocks. Robotaxi experience via 3/Y comes well before high-volume Cybercab.
Capability moat as he told it: millions of cars training, AI plus vision only (no expensive sensor suite), so today’s 3/Y/S/X already sit on the unsupervised path. Cybercab gets an overspec AI5 computer. Idle fleet hours become distributed inference: 100 million cars times about 1 kW of efficient inference is about 100 GW of compute if you use the idle window. That is Elon’s upside sketch, not a booked utility interconnection.
The set: no controls, inductive charge, parking lots into parks
On the demo set he said about 50 Teslas were driving autonomously across roughly 20 to 30 acres built like a park ride. The point of the cabin: no steering wheel, no pedals, no controls. Robotaxi inductive charging with no plug — that was the stage demo. Production Cybercabs in Austin use a hidden NACS connector, not live inductive ops. City-level punchline: parking lots can become parks when cars do not need to sit where you left them.
